Self-Care Meditation for Social Workers: Meditation Strategies for Self-Care of Providers

This workshop describes culturally diverse faith-based and secular forms of meditation for (1) personal benefit/as a strategy of self-care for social workers/providers, and (2) as a strategy for clients to reduce anxiety/mood/other symptoms and enhance concentration, ability to detach from traumatic/stressful cognitions and emotions, and enhance positive aspects of living and social action. Several case applications will be described of both sit-down/regularly practiced meditation, and "spot" or tactical application, and didactic/experiential introduction to 13-step process to introduce self and clients to four or five forms of meditation: mantra, breath count, mindful breath awareness, Buddhist gathas and metta. Benefits, cautions, and relevance of meditation to prayer are described.
