    Presenter: Estelle Simard, MSW, LICSW, ABD-Education 

    This training delves into the unique cultural, historical, and social aspects of American Indian communities, providing a comprehensive understanding of their diverse needs and strengths. The participant will learn to apply culturally relevant social work practices that honor and respect American Indian traditions and values. 

    Learning Objectives
    1. Understand the historical and cultural contexts of American Indian communities. Participants will gain understanding of a transdiagnostic treatment approach.
    2. Develop culturally sensitive intervention strategies 
    3. Foster respectful and effective social work practice with American Indian clients.
     

     

    About the Presenter:

    Estelle Simard is from the Anishinaabe Nation, from the territory of Treaty #3, and a member of Couchiching First Nation. Estelle is a faculty member at the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Department of Social Work and works as the Director for the Center of Regional and Tribal Child Welfare Studies. She has taught professionally for five years at this institution, bringing in Indigenous pedagogy, research, and service. In addition, Estelle continues to be the Executive Director of the Institute for Culturally Restorative Practice where much of her experience is in the culturally competent management of integrated children’s mental health and child welfare services. She has direct supervisory and clinical services expertise with Indigenous people and has specialized in family preservation strategies by incorporating cultural activities into service delivery and practice. In addition, she has presented at National and International forums on child welfare on “cultural attachment theory”. Estelle is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership/Curriculum and Instruction with the University of Phoenix. Her dissertation is entitled “A qualitative descriptive study on cultural attachment theory”.
