The Role of Social Workers in Goals of Care Conversations with Seriously Ill Patients
Patients have the right to make healthcare decisions driven by their values, goals and preferences, including accepting or refusing proposed treatments and procedures. Social workers and other healthcare professionals have an ethical obligation to ensure that a patient’s treatment plans are consistent with those values, goals and preferences.
Historically, advance directives have been used to elicit patients’ healthcare preferences. Recent literature has identified the need to move beyond just recording healthcare preferences in a legal document to a more robust advance care planning process including a conversation about the patient’s values and goals. This webinar will address the various roles of social workers in conducting goals of care conversations about life-sustaining treatment with seriously ill patients.
Learning Objectives:
List 3 limitations of advance directives
Identify 3 social work roles in goals of care conversations about life-sustaining treatments
Identify 3 resources/educational materials related to goals of care conversations
