Confront Dehumanization of Humans in Human Services 1 CEU - May be counted as Cultural Responsiveness, Ethics or Supervision Presenter: Dr. Neerja Singh, LICSW, LADC
The session will acknowledge and challenge the oppression experienced by the humans social workers serve in different programs. Presentation will discuss the phenomenon of psychological condition of the oppressed where they are “taught” to dehumanize themselves with stigma and shame, that often leads to a sense of “incompleteness.” The participants will be encouraged to explore and identify how the “welfare system,” which has been designed to support people towards a state of authentic freedom, has become an oppressor. We will utilize narrations form the public servants to discuss the “fear of freedom: and dual-consciousness” that oppressed experience leading to a sense of self-depreciation. The workshop will conclude with discussion of attitudes and strategies for social workers to break the silos between policy and practice through an advocacy lens. We will identify ways to challenge the oppressive practices of the human/social services operations and dismantle the hierarchical setup based on colonial framework. The presenter will utilize examples of the approach social workers can adopt to incorporate social determinants of health into clinical practice and gather and utilize the data for policy formulation.
Learning Objectives 1. Learn strategies to integrate clinical practice and policy arenas. 2. Develop an insight and challenge the colonial foundations of human services system. 3. Identify ways to incorporate social determinants of health in clinical practice and policy development in social work.
