How Social Workers Can Become More Culturally Intelligent About Black People
Historically, cultural competence efforts tend to approach racial and ethnic minority groups as a whole. However, in response to the second wave of the Black Lives Matter movement, social work has seen a proliferation of culturally specific trainings about Black people. This movement reflects a growing recognition that social workers need tailored and targeted information about the needs and experiences of Black people. The purpose of this presentation is to elaborate on how social work practitioners can benefit from and take part in this movement. The presentation will begin with a historical overview of social work education and the minimization of Black social workers and Black content. Next, the presenters will discuss the continued need for social work in Black communities to address structural violence and historical trauma. The presentation will end with micro, mezzo, and macro recommendations for cultural competence information and skills development.
The presentation has three main objectives: (1) to describe the historical gap in social work education and training on Black content, (2) to recognize the continued need for tailored and targeted social work interventions in Black communities, (3) to identify professional development opportunities to increase cultural intelligence about Black people.
