Stop Self-Sabotaging: Why the World Needs Empowered Social Workers and What to Do About It 1 CEU - May be counted as Ethics Presenter: Laura Hanley, MSW, LICSW
Social workers have superpowers: we serve as counselor, liaison, broker, advocate, resource coordinator, systems administrator and reference guide. Unfortunately though, social workers are frequently misunderstood and regularly undervalued in the public eye. This presentation will focus on the barriers social workers face, the reasons for these barriers, and ways in which social workers can advocate for greater equity in their personal and professional lives. Learning Objectives 1. Learn how systemic barriers, rooted in racism, sexism, and ableism, have prevented social workers from being seen as critical members of a healthy and just society. 2. Define ways in which social workers may be inadvertently perpetuating this mythology through their own self-sabotage. 3. Identify potential paths forward for social work advocacy in both organizational and individual settings.
About the Presenter Laura Hanley, MSW, LICSW, is a corporate mental health educator, speaker, and psychotherapist. Throughout her career, Laura has seen social workers limit their potential and their power through self-sabotage and self-doubt. Laura is passionate about empowering social workers to know their strengths and identify the ways their superpowers can be diversified in today's marketplace.
