This three hour workshop is designed for mental health clinicians who have completed an introductory Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training and are now seeking practical, ethical guidance on integrating DBT into a private practice setting. Many clinicians struggle to determine which elements of DBT are essential to the model and which can be adapted to fit their caseload, practice structure, and clinical style. This training clarifies the core components of DBT, the function of each treatment mode, and the clinical strategies that make DBT an evidence based modality. Through a combination of teaching, case examples, and applied discussion, participants will learn how to preserve treatment integrity while tailoring DBT to the realities of private practice. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the purpose of each DBT component, identifying the non negotiable elements that uphold fidelity, and recognizing where flexibility is both possible and clinically appropriate. This is not an introductory DBT course; it is intended for clinicians who already have foundational DBT knowledge and want support in adapting the model responsibly within their setting.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Describe the function and purpose of each of the four core components of DBT (individual therapy, skills training, phone coaching, and consultation team).
Identify the goals, tools, and therapist interventions associated with each DBT treatment mode, including how these elements support the overall theory of the model.
Differentiate between essential, fidelity dependent components of DBT and elements that can be ethically adapted to meet the needs of a private practice environment.
Apply a structured decision making framework to evaluate potential adaptations while maintaining adherence to DBT principles and preserving treatment effectiveness.
Articulate how to communicate DBT informed services to clients, referral sources, and payers in a way that is accurate, ethical, and aligned with professional standards.
