What happens when you can’t trust people? When a life event so completely shakes the foundation of our willingness to have human relationship that traditional therapeutic“ trusting relationship” is no longer a viable approach to therapeutic intervention? In this presentation, we will be examine the myriad of therapeutic and diverse ways that animals seem to help humans overcome trauma. This is an opportunity for social workers to learn best practices in trauma informed animal assisted intervention.
Objectives:
- Identify the types of animals best suited for therapeutic intervention and rationale for why?
- Identify 3 of the most prominent and evidence supported animal assisted interventions models.
- Integrate trauma informed clinical targets with an understanding for how animals can assist in achieving these treatment goals
- Articulate the 5 key principles for animal well-being utilized in the process of incorporating animals into a trauma intervention
