Couples in Transition: Clinical Approaches for Supporting Transgender Individuals and Their Cisgender Partners 1 CEU - May be counted as Clinical or Cultural Responsiveness Presenter: Dr. Nomi Ostrander, PhD, MSW, MPH, LICSW
Mainstream visibility of transgender individuals and their families has increased over the past decade. Memoirs, movies, and television shows have trickled into popular US culture with stories detailing someone’s transition experience, along with the transition’s impact on their romantic relationships. Most of these depictions show the relationship ending in dramatic ways. Research offers a slight corrective to that narrative, demonstrating that approximately half of pre-transition romantic relationships remained intact during a partner’s gender transition. In trying to understand why some relationships work and others do not, researchers have suggested specific challenges that couples navigate this process. These studies are often from one partner's perspective. This qualitative study (n=12) is the first project that explores how both members of a couple navigate one partner's transition. Each dyad had three separate interviews (the couple, partner A, and partner B) with the researcher. Through these interviews several themes emerged. The results from this project will help both individuals going through this experience and therapists who might help the relationship navigate this change.
Learning Objectives 1) Understand the complex nature of trans-inclusive relationships; 2) Identify key challenges that both partners might face; and 3) Develop therapeutic pathways when working with trans-inclusive relationships.
