Ethical Integration of Spirituality in Practice

    Presenter: Laura Beaver, LCSW
2 CEUs - may be counted as Clinical, Ethics or Supervision

At the core of spirituality is the idea of making meaning or sense out of our suffering and experiences in life.  This is something that all social workers will have to wrestle with as individuals, as well as guide their clients in during the helping process.  With the perspective of the whole person, social workers cannot ignore the deep spiritual significance of suffering and needing help.   It is, however, of utmost importance that in integrating spirituality into practice, social workers understand the ethical guidelines in this often-ignored area of practice.  It is also imperative that field instructors and supervisors understand practical examples of how this can be done and how to help teach it to students and those under supervision.

This workshop will lay the foundation for understanding spirituality in practice, providing tangible examples and ethical considerations.  It will also provide opportunities to collaboratively brainstorm ways to work with clients, teach students, and demonstrate to supervisees what this looks like.  Lastly, it will give examples and tools that social workers can use with clients and for themselves to work towards fully ethically integrating spirituality.

In this session you will learn the following:
    1. Understand what integration of faith and spirituality in practice means and why it is important
    2. Define the difference between spirituality and religion
    3. Understand assessment tools available for spiritual assessment and practice using them
    4. Brainstorm ideas of how to integrate learning into current practice

    About the Presenter
Laura Beaver is an LCSW in Texas who is EMDR trained and an IFS Level One practitioner. She obtained her BSW from Baylor University and her MSW from Washington University in St. Louis. She has over 16 years of experience teaching and leadership in BSW and MSW programs. Her passion is in investing in the next generation of social workers through unmatched support and innovation with supervision, field instructors, and field education.  She does this through consulting and teaching current and future supervisors as well as working with social work education programs to innovate and enhance their field education systems.  When she is not consulting, she is in private practice at Oak and Willow Counseling in Flower Mound, TX where she utilizes IFS and EMDR to help those who have experienced trauma, grief, and loss.
