Screening, Assessment, Support, and Intervention for Victims & Survivors of Domestic Violence During the Covid-19 Pandemic
While “stay home, stay safe” is the primary risk reduction strategy for Covid-19, effective in reducing the spread of the disease, it can leave present and past victims and survivors of domestic violence and trauma in difficult or dangerous situations. Feelings of being trapped and powerless can activate old memories, fears, and intrusive symptoms for survivors. In unsafe relationships, the additional stressors of isolation, financial hardship, worry for family, and profound uncertainty can escalate already existing domestic violence in both frequency and severity. Clinicians find they are having difficulty ensuring that their clients are safe, able to implement safety plans, or able to flee if needed.
