    What do we know about the therapeutic role that animals play in the emotional lives of children. Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) and Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI) offer emerging new evidence supported practices to assist children strengthen empathy, trust and attachment, and relational competence. Animal Assisted Social work offers new perspectives on the importance of animal in the lives of children and families and can be a valuable tool to improve positive youth development and mental health outcomes. This webinar will explore the exciting new field of Animal Assisted Social work with children and will showcase some of the many benefits associated with Human-Animal Connection.

    Objectives:
    • Describe and discuss the theoretical approaches to Animal-Assisted Social Work and the concepts of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) and Animal-Assisted Activities (AAA) specifically for children. 
    • Respect the role of animals in therapeutic settings by adopting standards of care that support safety for animals and people and endorse a commitment to the ethics and values of the social work profession as they apply to working with the Human-Animal Bond (HAB) and Animal Assisted Interventions (AAI).
    • Demonstrate understanding of the applications and practices needed to safely introduce animals into therapeutic settings with children.
    • It is the objective of the class to expose participants to the opportunity for inclusion of animals as an adjunct to Social Work practice. This course will highlight ethical considerations and best practices for the therapeutic role of animals in the lives of children. 
    • Animals can be introduced into a number of therapeutic settings, with a diverse population. The application of Animal Assisted Social Work and the specific application of Therapy/Activities/Education (AAT/AAA/AAE) often referred to under the term Animal Assisted Interaction (AAI) can be used with individuals, groups, families and in community settings. Animal-assisted applications have been established as useful across cultural, gender and developmental considerations.
    • The field of animal assisted interventions continues to benefit from additional research activity and the development of practice standards, guidelines and protocols. Examples of research activity will be provided to explore methods for evaluation demonstrating the efficacy and many benefits of this approach.
