Working with LGBTQ clients and their families requires social workers to be aware of multiple ethical codes and cultural competency standards. Practitioners frequently address issues around transphobia, homophobia, gender identity, religious or spiritual beliefs, sexuality and income disparities. These often impact both our clients and ourselves. This workshop will cover applicable ethical and cultural competence standards, definitions of gender, gender identity, sex, and sexuality, confidentiality considerations, language usage and best practices.

    Learning Objectives:
    • Identify specific ethical considerations with LGBTQ clients.
    • Understand the difference between sex, sexuality and gender.
    • Learn the impact of implicit bias.
    • Identify particular confidentiality and informed consent considerations.
    • Identify LGBTQ resources that support best practice.
