Mental Health Treatment for the Family System

    Speaker: Katie Richburg, MA, LCPC
    1 CEU

This presentation explores the critical role of the family system in mental health treatment, highlighting how family dynamics impact individual well-being. Attendees will learn evidence-based therapeutic approaches, and how Newport Healthcare’s programs promote healthy communication, boundaries, and support, empowering families to heal and thrive together.

Katie Richburg presents how mental health needs extend to the whole family system, as well as the unique qualities of Newport Healthcare as a provider of mental health services for teens/young adults and their families and how this can help your clients and their families.

Newport Healthcare is a clinically intensive, short-term residential program that primarily treats mental health. They treat a myriad of symptoms and behaviors including trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and self-harm to name a few. They also treat substance use and eating disorders on a secondary basis.

Newport Healthcare uses an integrated approach that includes many different treatment modalities that are clinical and experiential to address the core underlying issues so that our clients can achieve long-term sustainable healing. They provide individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and psychiatric services. Their experiential therapeutic modalities include art therapy, music therapy, equine-assisted therapy, yoga, and mixed martial arts. They also offer adventure therapy which may include hiking, surfing, ropes courses, rock climbing, paddle boarding, biking etc.

    Learning Objectives:
    1. Understand the Role of the Family System in Mental Health: Attendees will be able to explain how family dynamics and relationships can influence individual mental health, particularly in adolescents.
    2. Recognize the Impact of Mental Health Disorders on the Family Unit: Participants will gain insight into how mental health issues like anxiety, OCD, and depression can affect the family system, creating stress, conflict, or maladaptive coping strategies.
    3. Identify Effective Family-Based Mental Health Treatment Approaches: Learners will explore research-based therapeutic interventions that engage the entire family in the healing process, such as family therapy, psychoeducation, and systemic approaches.
    4. Learn about Newport Healthcare’s programs and services as a unique provider of holistic mental healthcare for the whole family

    About the Speaker:
I’m Katie Richburg, and I serve as a Clinical Outreach Specialist for Newport Healthcare in Minnesota. In my role, I provide consultation to families and professionals when a higher level of care is required, guiding them to find the best options for their needs. Navigating the complex landscape of mental health treatment, from understanding levels of care to deciphering insurance coverage, can be overwhelming. My mission is to bridge that gap, enhancing access to the right care for each individual. With over 20 years of experience across various therapeutic settings, I’m dedicated to supporting individuals and families as they navigate the treatment process. My background includes earning a degree from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, followed by a Master’s from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. Over the years, I’ve worked as a therapist in both Residential and Outpatient care and hold a deep belief in the power of family in the recovery process. When I’m not working, you can find me enjoying my book club, painting, playing tennis (and more recently pickleball too), traveling, and, most importantly, spending time with my family.
