The Role of the Social Worker in helping Patients Navigate the Complex Healthcare System 1 CEU - May be counted as Cultural Responsiveness or Ethics Presenter: Kristen M Fischer, MSW, LGSW, NSW-C
Healthcare systems are complex to navigate. Various factors, including health literacy, Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), burden of illness and unfamiliarity with/trust in healthcare facilities and providers can become barriers to patients’ and families’ ability to access and navigate quality healthcare. We will explore the ethical implications of these barriers and demonstrate how the core values of the NASW Code of Ethics inform social workers’ roles in helping patients to navigate their health care journeys successfully and with dignity.
Learning Objectives: 1.Describe factors that impact patients’ and families’ ability to access and navigate quality healthcare. 2. Explore the ethical implications of barriers to healthcare, and the NASW Code of Ethics’ relevance to social workers’ efforts to mitigate these barriers. 3. Strategize methods of direct psychosocial support and broader patient advocacy to aide patients and families in accessing and navigating quality healthcare. About the Presenter Kristen Fischer, MSW, LMSW-NSW-C is a Certified Nephrology Social Worker, who has worked with kidney transplant recipients and in Clinical Ethics for more than 20 years. Kristen is the founder of Kristen M Fischer Consulting, focusing on professional education, mentorship and ethics training, workplace well-being, and healthcare navigation and patient support. She is actively involved in professional organizations including the NKF Council of Nephrology Social Workers and NASW-ND.
