This workshop will focus on the impact that trauma has on individuals across the lifespan; the importance of resilience and recovery; and beginning steps to implementing trauma informed care. We will briefly review research studies that show correlations between adverse childhood experiences and physical health conditions in adulthood as well as resiliency factors. Come prepared to engage in discussion and evaluation of policies and practices. Are you promoting healing or retraumatizing?
LEARNING OBJECTIVES – Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
• Gain a better understanding of trauma and the impact it has across the lifespan.
• Obtain a basic understanding of trauma-informed care.
• Begin to evaluate their own practice/agency as it relates to trauma-informed care
Paula Verrett holds an MSW from UW Oshkosh and is a Certified Peer Specialist. She has a particular interest in trauma and mental health and works as the Recovery Specialist at NAMI Fox Valley. Paula has played an active role in bringing trauma informed care to Wisconsin and has served on the Wisconsin Trauma Informed Care Advisory Committee to the Department of Health Services since its inception in 2009. Paula is passionate about helping people understand the lifelong impact that trauma has on the lives of individuals and truly believes that people can and do recover and live healthy, meaningful lives with support from healing relationships.
