Synopsis: Straw by Tyler Perry is a gripping story of Janiyah Wilkinson—a single mother whose struggle with poverty, isolation, and mounting pressures drives her to a breaking point after a series of unfortunate events—the film provides an impactful exploration of desperation, resilience, and survival. It depicts complex realities faced by individuals overwhelmed by systemic barriers and societal expectations. Following the movie, participants will engage in a dialogue to assess personal biases and assumptions, identify crisis intervention strategies, and the necessity of compassionate, community-based support systems that address individual and family needs. The discussion will also focus on reflective practice, ways to enhance empathy, and the importance of trauma-informed interventions. This session is relevant to human services professionals working at a micro, mezzo, and macro level.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will:
Identify some behavioral and emotional warning signs that suggest an individual or family may be approaching a state of crisis, particularly those related to mental health and emotional distress.
Discuss ways for trauma-informed approaches to be integrated into interventions and supports at the micro (individual), mezzo (group/community), and macro (policy/systemic) levels.
Analyze and discuss strategies for more responsive and effective interventions—both individual and systemic—for those experiencing or nearing a mental health crisis.
Explore how poverty, social expectations (e.g., gender roles), personal biases and assumptions, and inequitable access to resources contribute to the escalation of personal and community crises.
