This session was recorded during the 2021 Alaska chapter of the NASW Bi-annual Conference.

The purpose of this panel discussion is to explore the current context of social work education in Alaska and the United States with a focus on how COVID-19 has impacted social work education and practice and to discuss how social work education can be responsive to the current workforce needs in Alaska. The objectives of this presentation are to:

Explore the national context of social work education States with a focus on how COVID19 has impacted social work education and practice.
Describe the BSW programs at UAF and UAA and the MSW program at UAA.
Discuss how the UAF and UAA social work programs can be better responsive to the current and future Alaska workforce needs.

Mary Dallas Allen, PhD, MSW is the program coordinator for the UAA MSW program, and she is also the faculty advisor for the MSW / MPH Dual Degree, the School Social Work Specialization, and the AK LEND program. Dr. Allen is currently a fellow in the Social Work Health Future Lab, a program sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that aims to apply futures thinking and foresight practice to address the social determinants of health.

Retchenda George-Bettisworth, DSW, MSW is Clinical Professor, and Statewide BSW Rural Cohort Coordinator. She has been working in the field of social work for over 20 years, focused in the areas of child welfare, work-force retention, and social work education and administration. Dr. George-Bettisworth is committed to providing access to quality higher education for students in rural and remote areas, and culturally relevant practice for all individuals.
