The goal of this course is to provide a bridge between the practice of Social Work and the complex workings of the autonomic nervous system using Yoga techniques. Traditionally, little attention has been paid to the state of the client’s nervous system in mental health care. Yet, the autonomic nervous system regulates anxiety, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which bring the majority of people into psychotherapy. Yoga is now being recognized as an important adjunctive treatment which is designed to give the client (and the therapist) the tools to regulate their own nervous system. This training can begin in the caregiver’s office.
Course Objectives:
1. The relationship between the autonomic nervous system and mental health.
2. The basis of the healing effect of selected yogic interventions.
3. How somatic psychology and yogic interventions can work in tandem.
