In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, hundreds of thousands took to the streets in righteous protest. As social workers, it’s our duty to work for social justice, and advocate for equitable policies and systems. Can we take part in activism, such as protests, as professionals and practitioners – or does engagement in this way need to remain personal? Will getting arrested during a peaceful protest affect our social work licenses? Knowing that we remain social workers both in and outside of our practice setting, there may be a number of questions and conflicts that come up for us related to our licensure, ethics, and values. Come take part in a panel discussion where social workers engaged in activism consider these questions and shed light on how we can ethically partake in social activism and movements for change.

About the Presenters
Katy Armendariz, MSW, LICSW started Minnesota CarePartner in 2014 – a child welfare agency that addresses mental health and chemical health needs of children and families from a racial justice perspective. She saw a need for in-home services for those who cannot make it to a clinic due to physical, mental, social, financial and/or transportation barriers. Due to the racial and attachment trauma of her experience, she is dedicated to helping others who have experienced trauma in their lives through a historical and systematic trauma lens. She is in recovery and commits her life to supporting the trauma healing and recovery of the community.

Jolene Engelking, LISW is the Beacon Project Coordinator at the Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition. She was appointed to the Minnesota Board of Social Work in 2018. She is a White Earth descendant who has spent most of her life in rural Minnesota. Her work focuses on providing training and support to communities across the country as they define justice and strengthen collaboration in their communities related to sexual assault. An additional area of personal and professional interest is the professionalization of social justice movements.

Dr. Karen E. Goodenough, PhD, MSW, LGSW, has been Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers - Minnesota Chapter since 2018. She received her BSW from St. Olaf College, MSW from Augsburg University, and PhD in social work from the University of Minnesota. Previously, Dr. KG worked in direct practice, non-profit program management, and has been a consultant in evaluation, data utilization, and strategic planning. She has also served as adjunct faculty in numerous BSW and MSW programs throughout Minnesota. Dr. KG is a skilled supervisor, trainer, and macro practitioner. She has supervised, coached, and trained interns, volunteers, contractors, board members, and staff from various professional backgrounds, and has provided hundreds of hours of training in such areas as supervision, ethics, policy advocacy, leadership, budgeting, evaluation, and research. Dr. KG is passionate about using data and best practices to build a purposeful future, and is currently focusing her research efforts on social work licensure.

Jamil Stamschror-Lott, MSW, LICSW and his wife Sara founded Creative Kuponya, a mental health organization focusing on out of the box and creative methodologies to bring about healing for individuals, communities and businesses. Jamil teaches Diversity & Equity coursework in Augsburg University’s Clinical Graduate Social Work program. Jamil is deeply committed to his family and his community. He loves reading books to his 2-year old daughter.

Pa Der Vang, Ph.D., LICSW is an associate professor in the Social Work Department at St. Catherine University where she has taught courses on social work practice with organizations and communities, and social work practice with groups, as well as Critical Hmong Studies. She emphasizes anti-racist and anti-oppression pedagogy, encouraging students to harness their inherent self power and agency to dismantle white supremacy and seek systemic change to improve the lives of the minoritized and marginalized in our communties. Pa Der is a cofounder of the Minnesota Hmong Social Work Coalition, and has served on the board of Hnub Tshiab Hmong Women Achieving Together for 17 years.
