Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people exist in every community, in every faith, and in every kind of family. Regardless of where you practice, as a Social Worker you are likely to interact with LGBT people or their families at some point in your career. Grounded in Social Work ethics and values, this webinar explores the importance of cultural competence and affirmative therapeutic practices when working with these families. Additionally, this webinar will explore the tension between personal faith and professional Social Work ethics for religious Social Workers who hold "traditional" beliefs about gender and sexuality. Learning Objectives:Objective 1: To understand social workers’ ethical obligations towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people and their families.
Objective 2: To explore the efficacy of various strategies by which religiously conservative social workers try to navigate the tension between their beliefs about gender and sexuality and the wellbeing of LGBTQ clients
Objective 3: To provide salient, practical, and effective methods for addressing and resolving the tension between religious beliefs and professional ethics
