Connecting the Dots: Social Justice as Macro Social Work Praxis
In the Code of Ethics, social workers are directed to promote social, economic, political, and cultural values and institutions that are compatible with the realization of social justice. Determining this type of compatibility necessitates social workers to have a thorough understanding of the problem (systemic institutionalization of oppression) and the solution (social justice). Only when social workers have a thorough understanding of social justice as macro social work praxis can we meaningfully participate in the social and political action required by the profession’s standard of professional conduct.
Participants will deepen their understanding of oppression, how oppression influences macro social work, and why this knowledge is key to being competent social workers,
Participants will analyze the power they have by unpacking their personal and social identities and learn ways to utilize their power in the pursuit of social justice.
Participants will learn the purpose of caucusing and participate in an identity-based caucus.
