Drawing on his experience and research at the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, Dr. Staley will discuss current trends in suicide mortality in Utah, the region, and the nation. Following this epidemiological overview of suicide, the conversation will move to the state of suicide prevention in 2023: prevention, intervention, and postvention. Dr. Staley will discuss recent successes and where we should go in the future to promote life among those we care for.

    Michael Staley, PhD

Michael Staley, PhD, is the Suicide Prevention Research Coordinator at the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner. He oversees near-real-time surveillance of suicide death in Utah, conducts in-depth, psycho-social-ecological research of people who have died by suicide, and oversees outreach to suicide loss survivors. He is the principal investigator in the Utah Youth Suicide Research Project, which aims to provide new opportunities in suicide prevention among youth by learning from those who died by suicide. Staley also supervises drug overdose mortality surveillance, research, and outreach to loss survivors. He earned his PhD in Sociology of Mental Health & Illness from the University of New Hampshire and lives with his husband, Brayden, in Salt Lake City.
