The central tenet of this course emphasizes that parental depression poses a serious threat to public health and well-being, and that all social workers have an important role to play in its identification and treatment. Parental depression is a mental health disorder that can cause feelings of hopelessness, irritability, and exhaustion—just to name a few. Feeling so hopeless does not only affect the adults with this condition, but also the children in their care. The care of children in early childhood (and beyond) has a strong influence on their social, emotional, and behavioral development. Interventions are needed to prevent and address its deleterious effects on children, parents, and families. Of course, not all social workers specialize in this field of study. Some professionals work directly with families who struggle with parental depression—offering individual counseling, family therapy, crisis intervention, case management, referral to resources in the community, and other services. Other social workers have expertise with different populations or may even engage in mezzo/macro level social work. Nevertheless, given the prevalence of parental depression, all social workers are in a position to have a positive impact on this public health issue and contribute to address parental depression and related adversities. Fortunately, adult depression is one of the most treatable of the mental health disorders. Specific strategies must be implemented to address barriers to prevention, identification, and treatment. This course highlights a range of strategies that social workers may utilize to support mothers and fathers suffering from depression and, in turn, increase the likelihood that their children follow resilient developmental trajectories.Upon completion, readers will- Gain knowledge of the prevalence, scope, and impact of parental depression.
