Self-care is a trendy term with images of manicures, bubble baths, and “retail therapy” coming to mind. However, self-care is much more than that and is an essential component of professional and ethical social work practice. In this workshop we will look at self-care as one aspect of preventing burnout, which if not addressed, could lead to impaired judgment and ethical violations. We will examine different types of self-care, SAMHSA’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness, and the importance of a self-care routine.
Objectives:
- Participants will understand what self-care is and be able to differentiate between various types of self-care
- Participants will be able to define self-compassion, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction
- Participants will understand the importance of self-care for ethical and professional practice
- Participants will learn new self-care strategies for establishing a regular self-care routine
