This webinar will review the current landscape facing librarians, educators, and students, both in Maine and around the nation. We'll look at the historical context that has made book bans a common practice and talk about ways in which this threatens democracy and student freedom. Participants will also take a look at the principles of librarianship, how materials are selected for schools and other institutions, and the process by which book bans take place, as well as legal precedents that uphold intellectual freedom and students' first amendment rights. An opportunity for participants to discuss challenges, as well as the discourse on parental rights vs intellectual freedom will conclude the presentation.

    Presenter:
    Samantha Duckworth
Samantha is the chair of the Maine Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee. She's been working in libraries since 2008, and received her MLIS from Simmons College in 2010. After several years working in public and academic libraries, Samantha worked in IT, and is currently a law librarian at a Portland based law firm. She has a special passion for digital privacy and security, and all facets of intellectual freedom.
