Traumatic events are an unfortunate part of our human existence. Recent studies reveal that 95% of the U.S. population have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Since COVID-19, we have an even greater realization that trauma happens in many forms and to diverse individuals across the lifespan. Trauma is seen across a myriad of practice settings, yet providers are often challenged in knowing how to be “trauma-informed” with clients they serve. This ethics workshop will provide a brief framework for understanding trauma, trauma types, and devastating effects of trauma. The emphasis will be on defining trauma-informed practice and its principles, exploring specific interventions that support this approach, and guide participants in identifying how they can more fully integrate trauma-informed strategies into their practice.
At the end of this 3-hour ethics workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify ethical principles related to best practice in the arena of trauma;
Explore trauma in its various forms and develop a framework for understanding manifestations of trauma;
Define trauma informed practice and its key principles; and
Develop practical guidelines for creating and promoting ethical trauma-informed practice.
