This workshop addresses the emerging social issue of working with Transgender individuals, which is relevant for practitioners and administrators. We will define and discuss Transphobia, and it’s devastating effect on each life area, including Dysphoria as a mental health issue. For those familiar with the LGB community, we will present issues specific to Transgender folx such as complex trauma, privilege, passing, dead-naming and transitioning. Our research-conscious Affirmative practice model focuses on inclusivity, building resilience and community and the importance of structural affirmation in agencies. We will discuss how we have used groups, activism, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as art, writing and Hypnotherapy to support Transgender clients. In addition, we discuss how social workers can become Allies on the personal and political level through confronting Transphobia, participating culturally, volunteering, etc.
