    The need for people with illness to be listened to is emphasized in this article; social workers are trained to be empathic listeners and are well equipped to respond to the need to be heard which is and all too commonly ignored aspect of helping people to cope.

     

     Learning Objectives

     

    1. Apply the concept of culture, stigma and meaning to the experience of illness/disability.

    2. Understand the social/emotional impact on clients and on social workers as they deal with their own illness/disability.
