Many people believe that 2020 represented a racial awakening in this country. While this belief is debatable, what is evident is that in 2020 and 2021 White fragility has been on full display in the passage of legislation in Texas and across the nation aimed at censoring any educational content that promotes anti-racist principles.
This begs the question, as a profession are we willing to actively advocate against this censorship? Are we willing to advocate for mandated anti-racist curriculum in all social work programs? Or are we content with simply developing culturally sensitive social workers who are unequipped to fight for social justice?
Key takeaways: Participants will 1) Be able to articulate White fragility as a manifestation of internalized racial superiority 2) Understand the connection between White fragility and current efforts opposing anti-racist education 3) Understand the importance of the profession actively advocating against current and future legislation and 4) Understand the importance of the developing social workers who are equipped to fight for social justice.
