Seeking Adaptive Resilience Strategies for Non-binary Young Adult Online Social Activists
The present qualitative study was an exploratory study which sought to examine the gender identity-based minority stress experiences and resilience strategies of non-binary individuals who engage in online social activism (OSA) both historically and within the current sociopolitical climate where systemic cisgenderism has metastasized into aggressive transphobia. The study sample was selected using non-probability quota sampling and included seven non-binary young adults aged 18-26 who engage in OSA. An intersectional lens was used and the seven participants represented six distinct racial and ethnic groups. OSA engagement was determined using the Online Social Activism Scale (OSAS). Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore each participant’s experiences with gender identity-based minority stressors and resilience strategies, both historically and related to OSA engagement within the current sociopolitical climate. The results of this study indicated that participants who possessed certain adaptive resilience strategies were more insulated from the harmful effects of gender identity-based minority stressors when participating in OSA than those who lacked these specific strategies. These results suggest that the development of certain resilience strategies may serve to better protect this already-vulnerable group from the harmful effects of gender identity-based minority stress.
