Over the past year, we’ve heard about the incredible work being done by those on the front lines of COVID-19 – including social workers. The coronavirus pandemic has caused systems and policies to shift very quickly and adopt new ways of providing services that meet the urgent needs of individuals, families and communities. How has social work practice adapted to such an ever-changing situation? What are the actual challenges that social workers on the front lines face day-to-day? And what does ethical decision-making look like in the midst of it all?

March is Social Work Month, where we celebrate this year's theme, "Social Workers are Essential". Join us as we close out the month by hearing from a panel of front line social workers as they discuss the realities of social work practice during the pandemic, including working with other systems and maintaining ethical practice. We will also be sharing our advocacy efforts and priorities related to supporting social workers and communities most impacted by the pandemic.



About the Presenters

Samantha has been at Hennepin Healthcare (HCMC) since 2016 working with surgery trauma in-patient hospital social services. The majority of the patient case load Samantha sees are adults who sustain injuries from auto accidents, gunshot wounds, tissue infections, and falls. Samantha recently completed research on reducing professional silos of hospital chaplains and social workers during COVID-19. This research focused on the differentiation and collaboration between the roles, reducing trauma for patients and managing self-care through a crisis environment.

Maria Hartwell is a School Social Worker at Paladin Career and Technical High School in Blaine, MN. Paladin has been in both distance learning and hybrid models during the current school year. Paladin approaches education through a trauma responsive lens and utilizes restorative justice practices. Maria also serves as the district’s COVID Coordinator, following MN Department of Health guidelines and protocols to ensure the safety of the school’s students and staff.

Nicole Linder has been serving families and patients in their homes with Fairview Homecare and Hospice since 2016 (recent company name change to AccentCare Fairview Homecaring and Hospice). Her focus during the last two years has been providing hospice services and support to families. Nicole has specialized knowledge of stress management/reduction, mindfulness, resiliency, life transitions (including end-of-life), grief and loss, chronic disease self-management, homecare, palliative care, hospice care, dementia, and caregiver education/support. Nicole has an AS in Integrative Health and Healing from Anoka Ramsey Community College, BSW from St. Cloud State University, and MSW from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities.

Stephanie Plaster is the Program Manager at The Link CORE Drop-In, where she works with youth who are experiencing homelessness in Dakota County. She received her BSW at St. Cloud State University and her MSW from the University of Minnesota. Stephanie is passionate about macro practice, LGBTQ+ rights, and feminism.

Amy Tudor, LSW is the Client Services Director at the Community Action Center of Northfield where she champions and supports the culture of a community-based, client-centered, and trauma-responsive organization. She leads and shapes programs that reflect a mission of listening and responding to the needs of the community while managing a team of advocates assisting individuals and families to meet basic needs. Amy also serves on the NASW-MN Board of Directors as the Southeastern MN Representative.

Nina Vongpheth is a proud Dakota Sioux/Laotian woman from the Lower Sioux Indian Community. She holds a BSW from Metropolitan State University and is currently a Hennepin PSOP Home Visitor with Division of Indian Work (DIW). She is highly passionate about her cultures that inspire her to advocate for cultural humility and to empower BIPOC communities. Nina holds an aspiration to work with individuals, families, and communities to thrive from the impossible to the possible!
