As social workers, how do we navigate today’s complex political and social climate while prioritizing the needs of the children in our care? In 2019, various news outlets, professionals, and parents began to address the mental health crisis affecting children, exploring ways to provide support. Since then, the pandemic has further exacerbated these issues, with children observing adults engaged in contentious debates about what is best for them—often without involving youth in the conversation. Many adults hesitate to speak for fear of saying the wrong thing, resulting in silence that leaves children and adolescents to process their questions, emotions, and thoughts alone.
This training aims to equip social workers with the tools needed to engage children in conversations about gender in a welcoming and affirming manner. Participants will learn how to navigate politically sensitive topics while upholding social work ethics, ensuring support for youth who wish to explore their identities and communities. This session offers 2 hours of continuing education units (CEUs), including at least 1 ethics hour.
