This workshop will focus on decision-making capacity and tensions between personal values, the NASW Code of Ethics, and ethical principles, when working with cognitively compromised older adults. Participants will have the opportunity to apply learned skills in weighing the risks and benefits of actual case scenarios.
Objectives: 1. Apply the concept of decision-specific capacity to older adults 2. Discuss the differences between personal values and professional code of ethics 3. Define the Social Work ethics ethical dilemmas and bioethics 4. Describe the major ethical principles that have an impact on older adults' health care. 5. Apply legal and ethical principles in the analysis of complex issues related to the care of older adults: informed consent, refusal of treatment, and advanced directives. 6. Apply a decision-making model to an ethical dilemma in social work practice.
