Exploring Boundaries in Social Work Practice: The Space In Between

Presenter: Sarah Meisinger, MSW, LICSW (she/her/hers)

2 CEUs - may be counted as ethics

The development and expression of boundaries in the context of professional helping relationships is the primary focus of this two-hour webinar.  Drawing on 25+ years of direct practice experience, the trainer will explore the importance of intentional boundary conversations in social work practice.  Time will be spent reflecting on key foundational concepts that inform boundary development and expression, including the social worker’s role and practice setting, the client’s perspective, access to and use of professional supervision and support, and the social worker’s ongoing self-awareness practice.  The NASW Code of Ethics’ standards, values and guiding principles will be emphasized as the primary foundation for boundary expression as a crucial component of ethical social work practice.

The risks of unbalanced boundary expression are reviewed along with the benefits of creating relationships that prioritize mutual understanding and expectations about boundaries in professional relationships.  New social workers will benefit from the seminar’s content as it relates to professional development in the field.  Seasoned practitioners will appreciate the opportunities to self-reflect on practice knowledge and expertise while enhancing self-awareness through pausing and evaluating boundary expression in practice.
