This three-part interactive CE series introduces rural and seasoned social workers to artificial intelligence tools designed to enhance clinical practice efficiency and effectiveness while maintaining ethical standards. Recognizing that rural social workers often work in isolation as generalists juggling multiple roles, and that seasoned practitioners may feel hesitant about adopting new technologies, this course provides accessible, practical training on AI applications in social work practice. The series covers AI fundamentals including machine learning, large language models, and algorithms, with a specific focus on applications relevant to mental health, child welfare, school social work, and rural practice settings. Participants will learn to use AI tools ethically for documentation tasks including progress notes, treatment plans, IEP goal development, and client communication while strictly maintaining HIPAA compliance and NASW Code of Ethics standards. Each session includes hands-on demonstrations using ChatGPT, Claude AI, and other platforms to practice prompt engineering techniques through the TIC Framework (Task, Instructions, Context), ensuring participants can immediately apply skills in their practice. The curriculum addresses critical ethical considerations including algorithmic bias, data privacy, informed consent, and professional accountability, with case study analysis to develop frameworks for evaluating AI tools. By targeting the unique needs of rural and seasoned social workers, this course fills a critical gap in professional development, offering time-saving solutions that enable practitioners to focus more energy on direct client care while building technological confidence and competence. Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Define artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and large language models, and distinguish between these technologies in the context of social work practice applications.
- Apply the TIC Framework (Task, Instructions, Context) to create effective prompts for AI tools that generate ethically appropriate clinical documentation including progress notes, treatment plans, and IEP goals while maintaining HIPAA compliance and removing all confidential client information.
- Analyze case studies to identify ethical issues including algorithmic bias, data privacy concerns, informed consent requirements, and professional accountability when integrating AI tools into social work practice.
- Evaluate AI tools using the NASW Code of Ethics and HIPAA standards to create a personal framework for determining appropriate and ethical use of AI in clinical decision-making and client services.
- Demonstrate practical skills in using at least two AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude AI) to complete common social work tasks such as drafting emails, creating client education materials, and improving case notes, while identifying limitations and potential risks of AI-generated content.
