This seminar will explore approaches to mental health treatment for individuals living with Long Covid and other less visible illnesses. The post-viral illness now commonly known as Covid includes a wide array of symptoms, including brain fog, memory deficits, fatigue, sensory disturbances, and more. With these myriad physical and cognitive changes, patients see widespread changes to their daily functioning, financial and social strain as well. Other chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and autoimmune illness that are both not always visible on the surface and can vary in presentation cause similar distress & confusion in patients and their providers. The cumulative toll of hidden illness creates increased stress, overwhelm, and mental health impacts. Before considering treatment approaches, this seminar will first explore the individual, family, and societal factors that impact patient experience and presentation, in the intersectionality with various forms of oppression. This presentation will explore the intersectionality of race, class, and gender with impaired access to care and attention to medical symptoms these patients often face. The discussed approaches to therapeutic treatment for this chronic illness will integrate social justice models of care.
Learning Objectives:
To explain the current definitions of Long Covid other hidden illnesses & relevant challenges patients face.
To explore mental health treatment approaches to help patients adjust to life with chronic illness.
To understand available resources that are available to this chronic illness populations, including ways to advocate with and for patients.
Presenter's Bio: Jaclyn French, LICSW has worked in the medical center in a variety of roles for the last 8 years. She began her work with Long Covid patients after her inpatient surgical unit transitioned to a Covid ICU during the first year of the pandemic. Her work has transitioned from focusing on patients who survived the ICU to patients in the community with Long Covid. She currently works in both the BIDMC Critical Illness and COVID-19 Survivorship Program as well as our hospital-based violence intervention program, the Center for Violence Prevention & Recovery. In the latter role her work focuses on crisis intervention and counseling for victims of trauma and violence.
