Stop Calling It “Medication-Assisted Treatment”: Emerging Practices in Addiction Psychotherapy

Presenter: Ian McLoone, MPS, LPCC, LADC

2 CEUs - may be counted as clinical

Is cross-addiction real? Is the old adage “Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic” actually true and supported by science? Do our clients really need to hit “rock bottom” before they get better? The answers to these questions do not always align with conventional wisdom. In this webinar, we will explore these and other thorny questions with an eye towards using the answers to inform our clinical work. We will talk about some of the new and emerging practices in the field of harm reduction and learn about some important new developments that are saving lives. Then attendees will learn about Addiction Psychotherapy. This will involve learning helpful skills and strategies attendees can apply to their work with individuals, groups and families to keep people engaged, instill a sense of hope, and assist them in making changes to their relationships with drugs and alcohol.

After completing this training, participants will:
    • Understand several new developments in the field of harm reduction
    • Explore common myths and misunderstandings about treatment and recovery from addiction
    • Have a working knowledge of emerging harm reduction practices and how they are applied to work with individuals
    • Increase their understanding and awareness regarding the latest paradigms surrounding substance misuse
    • Identify stigmatizing language and how it impacts the communities they serve
    • Gain strategies for keeping clients engaged in therapy
    • Learn about addiction psychotherapy and how barriers to treatment can be overcome through individual therapy
    • Learn a framework for how to work with people who drink too much but are not yet ready to quit
