The broad ethical principles that guide social workers (and all mental health/human service disciplines) are most commonly applied to our direct service relationships with clients and patients. However, the same broad principles instruct and inform the work of supervisors, managers, and executives; issues of boundary maintenance, conflicts of interest, competence, prudence and diligence, apply at all levels of an organization, and extend themselves to functions such as clinical supervision, personnel management, program planning, budgeting, fundraising, collegial and interdisciplinary cooperation, and community relationships.
The first portion of this seminar will focus on identifying and discussing the ethical guidelines and mandates that pertain to the management and supervision of human service providers. We will also review the most common ethical challenges and pitfalls that affect management efforts, primarily through the use of case studies. Most important, we will discuss techniques for resolving ethical dilemmas, as well as the use of ethics committees and agency ethics audits.
The second portion of the program we will discuss the ethical mandates that apply to nonprofit boards of directors. While these mirror ethical mandates at other organizational levels, boards have some distinctive challenges to address, including their allegiance to the agency’s mission, their relationship with staff, the ever-present issue of boundaries and conflicts of interest.
Although this program is offered most directly to supervisors, managers and executives, direct service providers are also welcome to participate, most especially if they anticipate moving into management. Similarly, board members are also encouraged to participate.
Participants have access to several case scenarios they should review and reflect upon to fully meet the 3 hours of professional development.
