TX - Supporting Immigrant Communities within an Unjust Immigration System: What Can You do as a Social Worker?

This training will provide information and theoretical frameworks to help us understand and work with those facing an unjust immigrant system and to better meet the mental health needs of immigrant communities.
Specific topics will include: internal enforcement, deportation, detention, and vulnerability human trafficking and exploitation, as well as important considerations around contemporary barriers to accessing social services and supports. Through activities and discussion, participants will have opportunities to integrate information into their own social work practice and community context and to explore opportunities for immigrant justice-related advocacy and activism.
Attendees will:
increase understanding of mental health implications for immigrant communities facing enforcement, detention, increased vulnerability to human trafficking and exploitation, and barriers to service access
identify and apply theoretical frameworks and intervention strategies to diverse contexts of social work practice
identify and apply theoretical frameworks and intervention strategies to diverse immigrant populations
consider ethical considerations and dilemmas in working with immigrant communities
