Trauma and Reunification Therapy During COVID-19: Collaboration with the Legal Process
Providing reunification therapy between a child and an accused abuser can be challenging in the best of times. COVID-19 has profoundly affected the normal social work processes, including, but not limited to, complications in the delivery of services, protection of the client, and maintaining HIPPA compliance. With the intermittent shutdown of the court systems, the backlog of cases, and the limitations of presenting evidence due to the pandemic, the collaboration between the child’s lawyer, Guardian ad litem (GAL), and the social worker is even more critical than ever. This presentation will focus on the intersection of historical trauma, potential retraumatization during reunification, and the generalized trauma associated with the pandemic. It is critical that social workers are familiar with the roles of the -GAL, the court system, and the legal process, in general. This workshop will provide a road map to navigate these systems in the age of COVID-19.
Objectives:
Understand the function of reunification therapy including the role of the GAL, the court system, and the social worker.
Identify the impact of the presenting trauma, the function of reunification and potential re-traumatization, and the complications engendered by the pandemic.
The participant will demonstrate an understanding of who the client is and the ethical responsibilities during the process.
