Neurology Matters: Recognizing, Understanding, and Treating Neurodiverse Couples in Therapy – Presented by the NASW Massachusetts Chapter
There has been a dramatic increase in the number of couples who are seeking assistance with their relationships because they either know or suspect that one member of the couple has Autism Spectrum Disorder—making them a Neurodiverse couple. Neurodiverse couples are those relationships in which one member is neurotypical (NT), meaning he or she has a pattern of processing information that falls within a typical range, and the other partner fits the profile of someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Because one member has ASD and is processing sensory information and communication in a non-normative manner, this difference between the partners can affect their relationship. Social workers/therapists must be aware of this so they can help the couple navigate their relationship. One’s neurology affects personality, strengths, talents, and challenges, as well as the way a person views the world, thinks, speaks, behaves, and feels. In order to successfully treat these clients, the therapist must be able to help them view their issues through a neurological lens. This requires the therapist to help the couple become aware of just how much their issues are based on their neurological differences is often enough to change the couples’ interactions. Upon completion, readers will: 1. Identify neurodiverse couples in your practice by becoming familiar with Asperger traits and resulting behaviors. 2. Learn to assist couples in understanding their particular neurological makeup and how it impacts the couple’s interaction. Understand how viewing couples through a neurological lens informs the therapeutic intervention.
