Social Work Practice with Refugees and Immigrants

Presenter: Habiba A. Ibrahim, PhD, MSW; Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, St. Catherine University

2 CEUs - may be counted as cultural responsiveness content (per MN Board of Social Work)

This webinar will explore complex dimensions facing social workers working with refugee and immigrant clients, focusing on strengths and adaptive capacity. It will include historical context providing an overview of refugees, immigrants and the displaced populations; and national and local policies that impact direct practice. Particular focus will be given to factors in resettlement and transition, such as migration and adjustment, intergenerational conflict, the social work delivery system and the role of social worker with clients, communities, and organizations. Attendees will be able to analyze the intersection of macro, mezzo and micro factors related to immigrants and refugees, such as individual, cultural and structural factors; examine possible ethical dilemmas that occur in practice with immigrants and refugees, and recommend social work ethical principles to guide professional practice with immigrants and refugees. Additionally, attendees will be able to appraise self-awareness and understand biases in self and others, and how these affects practice with refugees and immigrants.
