Moral Distress and Injury in Social Work

Negative impacts on mental health and well-being can be considered an occupational s guides social workers, and their professional and personal identities are often intertwined, making certain types of distress especially harmful. Social work education provides us with the knowledge to help navigate ethical dilemmas. However, there has been less awareness dedicated to the harms that can occur when an ethical course of action is known, but the social worker cannot take that action due to a perceived constraint or barrier. This type of distress is known as moral distress or moral injury, distinct from compassion fatigue or empathic strain and burnout. In fact, moral distress contributes to burnout, turnover, and depressive symptomology and has been a growing concern since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This session will review the concepts of suffering in the social work profession and discuss the sources and impact of moral distress. It will also include known strategies to date that may help mitigate adversive outcomes and promote opportunities for growth and resilience. Objectives:
To define moral distress and injury and distinguish it from other related constructs.
To identify sources of moral distress and strategies for coping in social work practice.
To identify moral distress in clients and employ strategies to mitigate adverse outcomes.
