Up to Me: A Decision Making Framework for Making Choices About Sharing our Challenges and Resilience
One of the best ways of decreasing stigma is to hear people’s stories of resilience, recovery, and strength. Stigma, however, is a primary impediment to story-telling; the majority of people are just trying to make wise decisions in their daily life about if, how, when, and to whom to share their lived experiences. In this presentation, the audience will be introduced to the Up to Me decision-making framework. Up to Me seeks to replace the self-stigma that some living with Tourette Syndrome and associated mental health challenges experience with beliefs of empowerment and hope. It does so by helping people: consider the tone of their internal narrative, explore the costs and benefits of disclosing their personal narrative, learn strategies for disclosing relatively safely, and craft a message that best represents personal goals. Learning Objectives: Social workers will understand the development of the UptoMe program for use with youth with Tourette Syndrome, and become aware of other groups UptoMe has been adapted to. Social workers will explore the five-step approach to changing hurtful self-stigma Social workers will gain exposure to using decision making model for Tourette Syndrome and other mental health disclosures
