Although there have been significant advances in the treatment of abuse-related trauma, a clinical disconnect remains between trauma-focused healing and sexual empowerment. Treatment often fails to encompass the full range of sexual healing or pathologizes certain sexual expression. This sex-negative approach can compound the existing sense of disempowerment and shame for those healing from abuse. Joining with survivors using a sex-positive approach highlights the understanding, support, and affirmation of sexual exploration and diversity with the foundation of trauma competency. This lecture presentation will explore the importance of sex-positivity and discuss empowering approaches to assist survivors throughout their healing journey.
Objectives:
- Recognize difference between sex-negativity and sex-positivity in clinical trauma work
- Outline possible impact of both sex-negative and sex-positive approach on survivors of abuse
- Identify biases when working with sexual wellness
- Develop sex-positive language to use with those healing from sexual, emotional, and physical abuse
