This continuing education course will explore the ethical responsibilities of school social workers when working with immigrant students and families. Participants will review core social work ethical principles and how they apply in the school setting, particularly in situations involving immigration enforcement and interactions with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The course will examine the rights of immigrant students under federal and state law, with a focus on confidentiality, advocacy, and equitable access to education. Special attention will be given to diversity, equity, and inclusion by discussing the unique barriers immigrant students face and culturally responsive ways to support them. The training will also address the impact of deportation or arrest on families and communities, as well as strategies for navigating support systems to meet the needs of children and youth. Through case examples and discussion, participants will learn practical strategies to balance legal, ethical, and institutional obligations while prioritizing student well-being and safety. Finally, the training will highlight best practices for collaboration with school staff, families, and community partners to create safe and supportive environments.

Following this course, participants will be able to:
    1. Describe the legal rights and protections of immigrant students in U.S. public schools, including issues related to confidentiality and access to education.
    2. Analyze ethical dilemmas school social workers may face when immigration/ICE involvement intersects with student safety and advocacy.
    3. Apply social work ethical principles and culturally responsive practices to case scenarios involving immigrant students and families.
    4. Develop strategies to collaborate with school staff, families, and community partners to create safe and supportive environments for immigrant students.
    5. Demonstrate understanding of the rights of schools and the responsibilities of leadership, educational staff, and related support personnel.
