The ability to assess and diagnose is a core competency for mental health providers. Upcoming changes in the new DSM manual will require practitioners to modify their current understanding of diagnostic symptoms and categories. This workshop will describe the development of the DSM-5, the changes to the organizational structure, and major revisions to the existing diagnoses.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify the major goals of the American Psychiatric Association in developing the DSM-5.
2. Participants will be able to explain the major revisions to the DSM overall and to the diagnostic criteria.
3. Participants will understand how to apply the DSM-5 to diagnosing clients.
