Child Protection for the Non-Child Protection Social Worker Presenter: Wendy Hendrickson, MSW, LICSW (she/her/hers)
3 CEUs
Many social workers collaborate with child protection social workers or with populations who are working with the child welfare system. Yet, there are often gaps in understanding how that system works – from details of the process to the roles of its workers. This workshop will provide a deeper understanding of the child welfare system in Minnesota, from intake and screening of child maltreatment reports, as well as the reasons a report may be screened out, through to the permanency process. We will address what happens when a report is screened in for an investigation or an assessment of child maltreatment, and what happens afterward. We will also break down the CHIPS court process. Come learn what the child protection case management process entails. Also included in the workshop will be a history of child welfare system changes in Minnesota, Fostering Connections, new information on the Family First Prevention Services Act and implementation, as well as the importance of the Indian Child Welfare Act.
About the Presenter Wendy Hendrickson, MSW, LICSW has worked in child welfare settings for over 25 years in Minnesota and Wisconsin, in areas including youth residential treatment, non-profit child welfare agencies, hospital level chemical dependency treatment, public schools, county social service agencies, court systems, and completed graduate level internships in hospital social work and the State of Wisconsin-Permanency Division. She provided supervisory oversight for over five years to county ongoing child protection/welfare; Licensing (Family Child Care, Adult & Child Foster Care; and Intake, Assessment, and Investigation social workers. Wendy has been an adjunct educator for the University of Wisconsin-Master of Social Work program, as well as a community trainer for the University of Minnesota/Minnesota Department of Human Services for the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy.
