Air Pollution, Environmental Justice and Climate Change- Presented by the North Carolina Chapter
Governments and industry have often resolved difficult decisions on where to site polluting activities such as hazardous waste dumps and heavily-trafficked roads by putting them in or near communities of color and low-income communities, whose members may be less able to mount an effective opposition. These communities, generally called “Environmental Justice” communities, also experience the adverse effects of climate change first and worst. This webinar reviews environmental justice and climate justice issues in North Carolina and discusses the essential role social workers can play in advocating for environmental justice and climate change mitigation.
Laura Wenzel manages the Medical Advocates for Healthy Air program of Clean Air Carolina. Medical Advocates for Healthy Air is a statewide network of medical and health professionals leading the call for cleaner air in North Carolina. Previously, Laura worked in the areas of community organizing, youth development, immigration services, civil rights and environmental justice. She cohosted and produced La Salud Familiar, a Spanish-language radio show on health and community, and founded a Spanish-language youth media program, Pa’lante, guiding Latino youth toward healthy, productive activities. Laura received her MSW in 2014 from the School of Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill where she focused on non-profit leadership, sustainability and community development, and her MA in cultural anthropology in 1990 from UNC Chapel Hill, where she focused on social constructions of mental illness.
